Before the costume leaves its hanger.

Begin with measurements.

Measure over the clothing you expect to wear beneath the costume. Include chest or bust, waist, hips, height and the relevant sleeve and inside-leg measurements. Explain where each measurement was taken and use one unit consistently. Compare these with the actual garment measurements rather than relying on a size label. Mention the movement required by your performance and ask about suitable ease.

Check the separate pieces.

Ask for a written list of the items offered with the costume. Collars, hats, belts, gloves and other accessories may be separate. Use that list when receiving and returning a hired outfit. Note any existing marks, loose trims or missing fastenings with photographs and agree how to report a concern before wearing it.

Handle the finishing gently.

Support the main body of a garment when lifting it. Avoid pulling it by a ruff, braid, pompon or decorative point. Keep jewellery and rough surfaces away from delicate trims. Ask how the actual item should be hung or folded; a heavy coat and a lightly structured collar may need different support. Let the garment air as instructed before packing it.

Follow the instructions for that garment.

Do not assume every costume can be washed, steamed or dry-cleaned. Materials, dyes, adhesives and decorative pieces respond differently to treatment. Request item-specific care instructions and ask before removing a stain, applying heat or using a cleaning product. For a hired garment, agree who arranges cleaning. Ask before altering seams, adding fastenings or attaching anything to the cloth.

Agree the dates and the handover.

Confirm the rental period, packing method, collection or delivery arrangements and return deadline in writing. Clarify the deposit and the process for damage or late return before accepting the terms. Sending an inquiry alone does not establish any of these arrangements.
